Stephen Tompkins was born in suburban Cleveland, Ohio in 1971. He earned a BA in philosophy from Bowling Green University and studied phenomenology and semiotics at Ohio University. He is a twenty-first century renaissance man, exploring his temperaments through art forms, primarily drawing and painting. His passion for creating "new hybrids of meaning" is at the core of his personal philosophy and reason for being an artist. Strange, silly, spooky and surreal, the images that tumble out of Stephen's mind are the product of an imagination given full reign. Paul Wynter of London Art wrote that Tompkin's work has a " freshness, vitality, and clear sense of discovery" (London Art, September 2002, Artist of the Week Column). He has been exhibited in group and solo shows in the United States and Europe, including a recent exhibition of Black and White Drawings in Geneva, Switzerland, where he hung alongside other notable Outsider and Marginal Artists. Stephen lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with his wife, Heather, and their two cats, Bella and Sputnik. He is currently collaborating with a London writer on a children's book.
