Born in North Carolina, John Robert Mason (1900-1997) lived and worked in Suffolk, Virginia. He was a career railroad man until his retirement. He used the local Hardee's restaurant as his studio, and became a local fixture there. His drawings, done on paper and cardboard with colored pencils and felt-tip markers, are characterized by stylized birds, moons, trees, and suns. His work is carried by American Primitive Gallery in New York City, and is a part of the collection of the Kentucky Folk Art Center, and the Meadow Farm Museum in Richmond, VA.,. He has been included in many exhibitions, including "Virginia Originals" at the Virginia Beach Center for the Arts from March 4 to May 8, 1994, and "Tree of Life" at the American Visionary Museum in Baltimore, MD. from November 24, 1995 to September 1, 1996.
