Erl Lumpkin (b. 1951) is a career hairstylist who has his own small salon in a working class suburb of Cleveland, Ohio. He is also a completely self-taught painter. Until Headfooters hung his work in the show DISTINCT VOICES he had never shown in a gallery (only his salon). Working in acrylics on canvas and canvas board, often with a jeweler's head lamp to help with the detail, Erl composes elegant scenes of richly-costumed, but faceless African American men and women. He has a stikingly graceful sense of form and composition and a bold feeling for color combinations. His jazzy paintings have been a hit in their debut at Headfooters. It looks as if Erl Lumpkin is at the beginning of an exciting second career.
