Michelangelo Lovelace (b. 1960) was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. As a child growing up in a single-parent, inner-city home, things were tough. Michelangelo dropped out of high school at 16 in order to better contribute to the household income. He began a string of low paying jobs; dishwasher, porter, shoe shine man at a local country club. He began to draw to escape during these difficult times. He earned his GED from Cuyahoga Community College in 1982. Lovelace continued to work at his art, and in 1984 was accepted into the Cleveland Institute of Art. He attended, but never finished in large part due to financial pressures. He was encouraged to continue to paint in his "gritty" style which so perfectly suits his large canvases of urban scenes. He has been shown regionally in many group and one-man shows over the last 15 years. In January of 2003 the Springfield (OH) Museum of Art is mounting Michelangelo's first solo museum show.
